Introduction: Built-in Bookcases in an Antique Home
Justin Fink visits Palermo, Maine, to help a veteran designer and woodworker build classic bookcases on site
Designer and woodworker Mike Maines is updating his 1830s Greek revival home with a new fireplace surround he designed to preserve the house’s character while adding a subtle modern feel. To do this adapts his job site to serve as a cabinet shop using tools most carpenters already own. He sets up a U-shaped workspace that allows two people to work without feeling crowded. Since time is money he uses a cut list that matches the actual workflow. Joining with fast and simple pocket screws, Mike builds the face frames first and sets them aside to maximize work space before building the boxes.
