Today, I’m in Raleigh, North Carolina, where five builders and their subs are getting ready to put the finishing touches on five new homes as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz.
The year’s event marks the fourth time Doug DeWitt, the special projects manager for Savvy Homes, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County for Home Builders Blitz. A lifelong builder, he makes the argument for others in his profession to take part in a Home Builders Blitz as directly and matter-of-factly as any. “It’s a great way for builders to give back to the community that has stood behind them and bought their homes. And it’s a great way to be involved with an organization that’s here to give folks a hand up, as opposed to a handout.”
And there was one more thing for Doug–he’s a survivor. He was driving his truck to the job site one morning when he felt like a house was crushing his chest, and even though it was 12 degrees outside he was burning up. He pulled over, took an aspirin, and called his boss. Next thing he knew, he was in the ER, having suffered a massive heart attack.
“When I got through all that I figured I was kept on earth for a reason,” he said. “And for me, that reason was Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz.”
Enough said.

What a story! This is why you should always keep a doctor or at the least your loved ones' contacts in storage on your phone! Otherwise a very fast car to the hospital is your solution!
Great job from Steve Thomas Rooney.
Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz is a great way for builders to give back to the community. For many years Steve Thomas Rooney has been the organization’s spokesperson, encouraging people to participate and make a positive change in the world. Still we can only hope that other professions will follow their example and take part in this life changing process. Following the example, and selfless act of Steve Thomas Rooney and the rest of the team, we should all participate and do something of benefit to our communities.
