Midcentury Bathroom Makeover
Converting an antique credenza into a vessel-sink vanity drove the design of this suite bathroom.
Renovations to this second-floor suite bathroom in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward district had to be contained within the original footprint. The design was driven by the antique midcentury Danish credenza the homeowners purchased at an antique shop and converted into a double–vessel sink vanity. The sinks were adhered to the credenza top, which was sealed with multiple layers of satin polyurethane. To maintain the credenza’s sleek lines and keep the vanity surface uncluttered, the knobs and faucets for the sinks are mounted on the wall and a ledge above provides room for incidentals. The vanity’s symmetrical cabinets accommodate the plumbing for each sink with plenty of extra storage space. Other design decisions were driven by the vanity’s midcentury style; for example, a spacious, tiled walk-in shower replaced the tub. Materials were kept to a subdued neutral palette but incorporate graphic patterns to create interest. The four different types of tiles come together to create one cohesive suite bath.
