Installing Decking

With the posts and exterior trim installed the decking was ready to go.

We installed a square-edge border board with a 1-1/4-in. overhang. Bruce made a scribe jig using a flashing card bent so the bottom leg matched the distance from the inside edge of the posts to the 1-1/4-in. overhang line. Cutting the notches and miters went faster than fastening the border board.

We used a combination of color-matched face screws driven in about 2 in. from the outside edge and Camo toe-screws using their tool.

The field boards were grooved boards installed using TigerClaw grooved board fasteners and the installation tool. As we closed in on the wall the TigerClaw tool would no longer fit, so we installed fasteners by hand on the last three boards. The wall edge of the last board was installed with face screws.

To draw each successive board onto the tangs of the fasteners, we used a combination of tools. A dead-blow rubber mallet, a TigerClaw clamp tool (I don’t think they are available any longer), and a Hetra PowerHand locking decking clamp did the job.
