Cutting Out Drywall for Doorways
In this video, Myron Ferguson introduces a drywall saw as an alternative to using a router when cutting out doorways.
Just like when I hang drywall over windows, electrical boxes, or the rough opening of a door, I don’t precut. Most of the time, I’ll take a router and route up each edge and along the top, but I thought I should introduce you to a drywall saw.
A drywall saw is not a saw you can cut wood with it because it’s very dull, but it’s got a lot of set in the teeth. I run it up alongside the stud and it cuts on a push stroke. When you pull back, you pull gently because you don’t want to tear the good face.
Instead of cutting along the top edge with the saw, I’ll go along the back side with a utility knife and score along the bottom of the door header. Then just hinge it forward, and cut it loose.

Nice to see people who take pride in their work and take the time to pass along their knowledge and experience to others. A tradition that's almost non existent in todays world.
