Home-Energy Tracking in the Palm of Your Hand
This smart energy monitor uses machine learning to identify and measure how much electricity each device in your home consumes.
The Sense home-energy monitor is a powerful tool that gives you detailed information about your home’s electricity consumption. In the past, you would need to install sensors all over your house to really know what slice of your monthly utility bill went to each appliance, light, or electronic device. But Sense can track where all the electricity goes even though it only measures the flow of power at your home’s main circuit breaker. Because every electrical device has a unique power signature, the smart monitor tracks patterns of energy usage over time and identifies which devices are which. You can watch your power use in real time on the free Sense smartphone app, plus Sense will notify you as it detects your home’s various power demands so that you can tell if it might be a good time to replace that wasteful old water heater or to retire those incandescent bulbs you haven’t gotten around to changing.
- Requires Android or iOS app plus Wi-Fi connection
- Provides alerts and notifications when electrical devices are in use
- Sense home energy monitor: $299; Add-on solar PV monitor or dedicated circuit monitor: $50
The Sense kit comes with all of the parts needed to install the monitor in your electrical panel in a matter of minutes, but because you have to connect the device to a high voltage circuit, Sense highly recommends that you hire an electrician to do the work.
The monitor can be installed inside or just outside your main service panel, depending on how much space there is in the panel.
