Hilltop Timber Frame Transformation

Cushman Design Group collaborated with their clients for this project in order to create a functional space with an entirely new design that transformed this hilltop property in Northern Vermont. The new kitchen was the first step, and they used both new and refinished Douglas Fir timber in the interior framing of the remodel. The large windows within the timber frame offer a magnificent view of the treetops surrounding the house and open up the space, allowing more natural light in. A seven foot long sink sits beneath the windows, and its length, multiple faucets, and the plethora of cabinets underneath created a much more functional and practical work space.

The kitchen opens up into a beautiful screened porch that is framed with the same timber that makes up the new kitchen. The year round outdoor living space boasts seating that overlooks the bedrock ledge it rests upon and serves as a bridge to ground the existing house on their expansive hilltop site. It rises from the exposed bedrock and the Douglas Fir posts are supported by steel bases mortared into the ledge below. Panoramic treetop views and the surrounding Green Mountains make it a comforting space that has seamlessly integrated itself into both the existing home and the natural topography of the landscape. Custom screens designed out of a high strength fiberglass and copper mesh paired with a durable and weather resistant finished floor, make it a space that can withstand the elements, especially necessary for the cold Vermont winters.
