Shimming Roof Jack
Cedar shims under each roof jack protect asphalt shingles from damage.
If you’re setting up staging on a roof for a repair or skylight installation, you could just set the roof brackets on the shingles and hope they don’t end up with scarred shingles later on when the sun hits them, but there’s a better way. Dave Larson of Hubbardston, MA, uses cedar shims set under each roof bracket to protect the shingles from damage.

Good tip and very simple. After we saw the roof jacks were marking the roof we cut strips of outdoor carpet and tied them on with plastic ties.
This isn't shimming, it's padding.
The pieces of wood used are called shims.
