The wholesale remodel of a kitchen/breakfast room born in 1930 required all the energy, ideas and organizational skills we (a retired helicopter test pilot and public school administrator) could muster. Armed with enormous enthusiasm and a limited budget, we planned the new footprint, chose and installed the appliances, plumbed the sinks, selected and installed the cherry cabinetry, created a wine rack from iron rings, and tiled the backsplashes, stove alcove and door/window surrounds. The granite placement and ceramic tile flooring were farmed out to professionals.
Made of copper, the kichen sink, found in an Arizona Mexican imports store, features repousse fish. The smaller island sink, also copper, came from a Tecate, Mexico tile store, source of all the backsplash tile. Accent tiles were an internet find from Jerusalem. In all, the final product is a “melting pot” kitchen, constructed with materials from around the world.
Any mistakes we made along the way we ascribe to “Old World charm”.
