100 y/o old was remodelled 20+ years ago with lots of paneling that was “in” at the time, I guess. Fireplace was just a cinderblock opening. Woodwork was very very dark. We stripped all the woodwork, added a pellet burner insert in the fireplace, with marble surround. Redid all the walls and added a tile entry floor. What a difference!

Fireplace was cinderblock and sat on the floor. Entire fireplace needed to be mud-jacked outside before we could start
woodwork and front door were beautiful. Just too dark.
again, panelling and dark woodwork. House is 100 years old and this remodel was done 20 years prior.
I love to tile. Almost every room in this house had tiling of some kind when we were through. Marble is a hard one to cut, so we were glad we had the fireplace mantel to cover the rough edges! ha! We built a box for the pellet burner to sit on so it would be up off the floor and look better.
Keeping the original woodwork, but stripping it down was worth it! Adding this tile entry was an issue, as the floor was very uneven. Upon cutting open the floor, we found that the prior owner had replaced a rock foundation with cinderblocks, however, they just pushed the original rocks in to the crawlspace area. House settled and the rocks made for a terrible floor. We removed the rocks and put in new subfloor for the tile.
