Question: What is Causing This Black Mold?
This summer we put a final coat of Cabot’s Semi Transparent oil based stain on our contemporary home in CT. We used the same material during original construction two years ago with no problems.
Six weeks after carefully power washing, allowing to dry in dry conditions the house is exhibiting significant black mold.
In conversation with Valspar and Cabot’s they have acknowledged that they reformulated the material with linseed oil and agreed that the new formulation acts as a mold magnet, despite NO CHANGE in labeling. Cabot’s and Valspar is not being particularly responsive and based on our experience I would recommend considering other products. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

we have the samae problem; cabot stain on cypress ... have called cabot with no acknowledgement of the issue ...
Nothing really jumps out at me, however my past experience says moisture? Is it possible there is execess moisture on or behind the siding? Facing North can sometimes prevent or cause slow drying time, esp if it is in a wet area. Good luck, keep us posted, ok? jr
Look at products like Cuprinol or Wolmans.
Don't use any exterior sealer or stains with linseed oil in it, you are asking for mold!
We have a similar problem on the exterior plywood panelled interior of our former garage we recently converted to a screened in porch. No prior problems. Light and air on 3 sides. Nasty black mold on the Cabot semi-transparent stain finish. Treated it but its coming back. No problems on other surfaces that were finished with another product. No response from Cabot...
This seems to be a widespread problem with the "new" formula of Cabot mold. I intend to pursue my rights as a consumer against Valspar. Please contact me if you are interested in joining me in a consumer action.
