My wife and I wanted a room where we could read, listen to music, have a drink with friends, or simply sit in front of the fireplace on a cold night. We basically wanted to get away from the distraction of the T.V. As a self-taught DIY’er I’m pretty handy with tools and materials. My wife does the painting. Having received FH and other DIY-type magazines for several years, I developed a plan in my head. I bought the gas fireplace on clearence from a local shop and built the room around it. I needed bookshelves and other storage, and I always enjoyed the ambiance of a leather, oak and brass library. This is what I came up with. I installed the fireplace, did all of the trim work, made the crown molding corner pieces, and built the fireplace mantle. Fortunately a friend of mine had a piece of 1″ slate that fit perfectly in front of the fireplace. When the fireplace is lit, that warm stone is a favorite spot for our cats. I finished this room two days before I left for my deployment to Afghanistan so I have yet to enjoy the completed room. No worries though, my wife reports that our pets and neighbors continue to enjoy the room in my absence.
