I write to share a learning experience and to praise my wife, Amy Sample as she was instrumental in the building of this pull out pantry for our bathroom items and linens.
We custom built this pantry which travels on casters and extra strength drawer glides. The pantry fills an under used space under our roofline – as you can see by the angled back of the shelves.
The trouble began as I was attempting to use a standard veneer iron for adhering the veneer tape to the exposed sides of the plywood. As we all know the straight and flat sections iron perfectly, the difficulty occurred when ironing the radius edges you see on the back of the pantry.
These elongated ovals were cut to provide sunlight from the window directly behind the pantry. The birch plywood which has been coated with 4 coats of neutral polyurethane between sanding with 400 grit sandpaper. All nail holes were filled with ground sawdust mixed with the same polyurethane.
Amy’s project saving idea was to use a ladies hair curling iron. The round iron element was easy to rub within the radius sections and provided the correct amount of heat to adhere the veneer tape.
The project was perfect and she saved the day. Wanted to share this learning experience with Fine Homebuilding and my fellow readers.
