This Ridgid 3 way pipe threader is special to me. It was my father-in-law’s; Pete King along with the pipe vise and Reed No. 2 pipe cutter. He was a 4th generation oil and gas man in Pennsylvania. Family members even worked at Drakes Well in Titusville PA. It has cut miles of thread on pipe that supplied much PA crude, built a couple of houses and even a car wash. The pipe vise was mounted on Pete’s truck bumper for years following him around as he tended wells.
These were passed to me by my wife’s uncle when he found out that I needed to move a water heater in my house and pipe my air compressor. These were also made in my hometown; Erie is the home to Reed Manufacturing and Urick foundry the maker of Ridgid pipe tooling. I like ‘experienced’ tools. I have several that belonged to friends that are no longer with us and when used I think of them. But the best part is when my wife tells me that she can smell Pennsylvania Crude on these, that they remind her of her father and he’d be happy that I was putting them to good use.
