Cedar sculpture
Building a laminated cedar radius. Brief over view
Using a 4×8 sheet of plywood with 2×4 framing on both 8′ sides, 4′ side and a cross brace on the diaganol. This keeps the platform true. After establishing a centre point and tracing a radius line 36″ out from centre point as a guide, I placed 4″ blocks at spacings of approx. 4″ apart along the radius.
Using a Ban saw to rip a cedar 2×4 into 1/4″ x 4″ strips x 12′ lengths and then running them all through a planner to prep for gluing
Be sure to have lots and lots of clamps. This is an out-door project, the glue I used is an outdoor polyurithane glue, nice thing with this is the set time is about 1 1/2.
After enough layers are put together to achieve the thickness of approx 1 1/2″, I hand planned the edges to match and then sanded. marked the ends and cut to make a perfect 1/2 radius.
The spindles are made from cedar 2x4s I made a template for the solar ray sanded them smooth and then rolled the edges with a 3/4″ round router bit.
The inter panels are attched with under mounted decking brackets. Posts are cedar 6×6 x16′ with a cedar 2×6 cross member mortised between 6×6’s to bear the weight of panel, the entire layout is in a curve to give the structure more stability.

This is simply beautiful! What a great design and so large! The first photo doesn't do the size justice until you had your dad stand next to it.
Great work!
