A job transfer moved us far from our family so when family comes to visit, I wanted to have a relaxing area that will not cramp anyone during extended stays. We also enjoy entertaining and having friends over. This was a two year project. The first year we dug up the rear area of the yard with the idea of making a patio area with a full outdoor kitchen the following year. For the future, as the kids get older, we want to finish the basement and make it a walk out. I got the ideas from home shows and magazine pictures. It was a long process to complete the transformation of our backyard.
I built a frame of metal studs and covered it in cement board. I was laid off last year for seven weeks, so I used that time to finish the countertops and tile work. My wife came up with the tile design. I formed a jig to cast the concrete countertops in place. I ran all the water, gas, and electric lines. The idea was to have all the comforts of home, but outside so we can enjoy nature, fun and games. Almost all materials were purchased at home centers. It has become our family treasure now and we enjoy just sitting outside watching the kids play.
