Our neighbor put up an ugly six foot privacy fence so my wife designed elements to make it look better. I made them, milling everything from treated lumber so it would match the fence.

An excellent idea to add a little flavor to a boring fence. You just have to keep them on your side of the property line so there is no disagreement if there is ever an issue. Nice design.
Great idea you had to improve the look of the fence. To make it even better, I'd consider staining the fence and your columns - and I'd use two colors [one for fence, one for columns]. Deep red for the columns and forest green [transparent stain] for the fencing will completing transform the space. Just a thot.
