Handmade Tile Back Splash
My husband and I designed and built our home in 2004. Since we designed the house I thought it appropriate to design and build our back splash. I came up with the design and my 2 daughters (1 with pottery experience) and I created the ceramic tiles.
Of course, this project had a huge learning curve. We made holes in 2 of the tiles to accommodate the outlets. These tiles broke when fired because of the shrinkage. We didn’t account for enough shrinkage overall. We made the original 37 tiles at 2 separate times, about 2 weeks apart, and the same color glazes turned out quite differently. After we finished them all, my husband still had to make several cuts because of the tiles’ unique shapes and different shrinkage rates.
Now that the back splash is finished, all of the setbacks seem inconsequential because we really love the way it turned out. My favorite part of the project is that the whole family contributed.
