How to support the front edges of 18 and 24 inch wide prefinished shelves over a 7 foot span? The solution needs to fit in with the overall design, be inexpensive and simple to install.
How about (white) 1 1/2″ PVC pipe? To match the white trim and shelves?
We used Acetone to wipe the print off of the pipe before installation. And tacked ‘test caps’ to the shelves with 3/4″ brads to hold the pipes in place and aligned. http://www.amazon.com/Genova-70172-Sch-PVC-DWV-Test/dp/B000BQQZM0
The pipe and caps cost less than $10 and it looks GREAT. This setup is now 4 years old and looks as good as day 1. The ‘legs’ on the lower 24″ shelves extend to the floor and the narrower 18″ shelves above sit on the lower shelves.

A bit of conflict, Fine Homebuiding vs PVC shelve supports? Seems quite out of place....I for one would not insult my skills with with cheap......Sorry.
frogranch, I have been a carpenter/conntractor for 30 yrs. My jobs range from multimillion home construction to small budget shelving jobs. I enjoy woodworking with hand-cut dovetails and hand planes as much as I enjoy golf. I try to tailor carpentry solutions to the customer. While I refuse to cut corners, To me, Fine Homebuilding is finding the best solution for the customer. There is a difference between inexpensive and cheap. Sdunt's inexpensive, sturdy solution will be perfect for the right customer.
Respectfully, to you frogranch, and my fellow craftsmen, are you put-off by technology? Is pvc a good solution for drains, or do "skilled" plumbers use only threaded metal drain pipe? Electricians: knob and tube or "Romex"?
