Challenges
Challenge: The initial plan was to design a single level home. The home owner did not want a basement. He was concerned with possible moisture issues in the wet seasons and had experienced prior problems with various flooring material and carpet. Additionally, he did not want an area without an exit or a view. After the first site visit with the General Contractor and Architect we learned that the property had a 13 foot fall. This would require extensive and expensive restructuring of the lot which would deplete our budget.
Resolution: A daylight/walkout basement design customized for the activity and entertainment room that was desired, including a full bath, two bedrooms, an additional laundry room and a locked wine cellar. The basement would open to the back yard and accommodate the beautiful scenery. This space has a colored concrete floor, cut in a sleek tile pattern, providing sustainability, durability and ease of cleaning.
Challenge: The secondary challenge was a result of the principal concern. The original request by the home owner was a single level home with a casual outdoor living space and swimming pool, convenient to the kitchen. With two levels and the kitchen on the main floor, this required a new design.
Resolution: An outdoor living area complete with a built-in fire pit and multiple barbeque connections plus an 18’ x 40’ custom heated swimming pool with an under water lounging deck and automatic pool cover. The East side of the house will be built up using large rock from a local quarry to retain the main level. Designing on the East side of the home would allow for an unobstructed city, mountain and territorial view. The outdoor living area would be blocked from the winds and shaded from the afternoon sun. The kitchen will be accessible from the sliding doors on the front deck, the entrance under the back deck and through the custom designed window at the concrete pool bar. The large covered patio is complete with an outdoor dining table and a beautiful chandelier overhead. This unbelievable outdoor living space is surrounded by a wrought iron fence and completed with an outdoor sound system.
