We wanted a home that looked like it was built during the Arts & Crafts era—one that felt like it was there for a hundred years and would be for a hundred more. Over the course of several years we designed every inch and built our “bungalow” on a wooded lot next to the privacy of a 50 acre wetland.
The materials and details are that of a time gone by—detached garage, real stone exterior, wood burning fireplaces, vertical fir custom cabinets and woodwork, white oak flooring throughout, stone tile, bluestone patios—but it has the energy efficiency and low maintenance of a modern home. All three levels have hot water radiant heat in the floor. The exterior is good for 50 years. Yet the woodwork was made, installed and finished on site like it would have been back in the day.
The kitchen was a huge priority, as we love cooking. While under construction, many people walked into the framed kitchen and wondered how we would have enough storage with so many windows and no overhead cabinets. Storage is more than ample with dozens of oversized drawers and a large shallow pantry. And the bonus—we get a remarkable view of the wetland while preparing dinner in the evening.
