I just learned of this deadline and am unprepared, but I’ll do the best I can. We bought a log house in 2000 and a lot had not been finished. I finished a partially finished basement with two guest bedrooms, large office/sitting room, 3/4 bath. This required finishing ceilings, tiling floors, lighting, much paneling, closets, etc. Half bath/laundry room done, kitchen redone, closed in porch finished, 2nd floor bath redone, empty pantry now has cabinets, shelves. Lots of other upgrades to lighting, trim, finishing existing trim (never had been sealed), landscaping, build room for exercising in shop, add work benches, some insulating. Our goal was to create a Southwest feel with Navajo rugs and design plus decorate with arts and crafts/mission style furniture and cabinets. Second goal was to have a warm inviting atmosphere. Third goal was to do it with least cost. Careful shopping, luck finding sales, and buying high quality items that would stand out—for ex., kitchen cabinets are good quality but not extravagant with special touches and our 1931 Magic Chef stove provides striking counterpoint. Upstairs bathroom was done with off the shelf black and white tile with design inspired by a pattern I saw in the men’s room at the Ahwanee Hotel at Yosemite (photo is terrible, I apologize) and use of high quality cabinets. A 10 year project done by a retired lawyer who has taught himself these skills. I am unsure of total cost, but it may have been less than $30,000 for a major remodel; kitchen (cabinets, countertops, floor, lighting) was a bit less than $10,000. Design was easy, work was hard (I blew out a knee tiling a floor), overcoming some bad choices of previous owner was challenging (basement wiring had been hung from joists and all had to be re-routed, for ex.). House is 2,615′, 3 bedrooms, open floor plan for kitchen/dining/living. 2nd floor is master bedroom, sitting room, full bath. On 27 acres with incredible views of Grand Mesa and West Elk Mountains; surrounded by piñon/juniper forest for complete privacy.
I have no plans (they were in my head and scribbles on paper).
