After acquiring land overlooking the South Toe River Valley in Yancey County, NC, the Owners desired to build an understated, modern interpretation of a southern Appalachian mountain cabin.
We situated the cabin down slope from the highest point of the hillside to minimize its visual presence from both nearby neighbors as well as those across the valley. The location also provided shelter from the often-strong northerly winds in the winter.
The “bent” wings of the house weave into the steep terrain and offer easy walk-out access to the land from the primary main level living spaces as well as to future-finished space on the lower level. The “thin” plan works well on the slope and allows stunning mountain views, ample daylight and cross-ventilation.
The screened porch provides generous outdoor living space, convenient garden access and due to its “terminus” plan location, does not obstruct views or sun from the interior.
At the “bend” of the house visitors enter through a covered Appalachian bluestone entry porch and cypress-wrapped foyer. The latter separates the public and private wings of the house and is directly adjacent to the typically-busy home office.

I've tried for literally four hours to find this article somehow in complete on the website. I can't. I can't even find out what past issue it was in. So I have this tantalizing little taste and great memory of the original article followed by great frustration. Argghhh!
