1880-Barn Renovation Done With 80% Recycled Lumber
We were hired to restore an old bank barn built about 1880, but once we got fully into it it became evident that there was too much insect damage to save the building. We salvaged everything we could and began to build a duplicate of the original using as much reclaimed lumber as possible. The wall sheathing came from the original barn as well as a 300 year old building that was comning down. the new timbers came from blowdowns that happened during a winter storm. The roof sheathing came from urban timber. The doors were reclaimed from an old carriage house that was coming down. We took them apart and shrunk them in size, and there was enough wood left over to build the gable-end door. The door hardware was taken off another old barn. You get the point–we were able to get about 80% of the board footage required from alternative sources. When you go inside, it looks like a 100-year-old barn.
