The McCorn Winery Renovation involved the adaptive reuse of the former 19th century winery building into a single family home. The winery located in the village of Hammondsport NY was one of many wineries that were established there in the 1800’s and subsequently closed by the onset Prohibition in 1919.
The three story building that was built into the hillside overlooking the village waterfront was used intermitantly in the 20th Century then left abandoned and to deteriorate. When aquired by the owners in the mid 90’s it was one of the few boarded up buildings in this quaint village that Travel Magazine has awarded it’s “Coolest Small Town in America” designation to in 2012.
Major water damage had occured and required extensive repairs to be made to the walls, sill plates and the stone foundation. The low sloped roof had to reinforced internally to be brought up to modern building codes. The building got a new roof, windows and the original siding was restored and refinished including repainting of the original sign.
The open floor plan on the upper level allowed design of the living space to be largly unobstructed with spaces defined by varying ceiling treatments and finishes. The 1913 two story porch addition straddles a seasonal stream and offers a magnificent waterfront view from the upper level and a unique three season bedroom below.
The mid level of the building features two guest rooms with full baths, a large recreation room and an original working wine cellar.
