This new house was built for a professional couple who wanted to find a larger home but still live within walking distance of downtown Decatur, Georgia. After looking for years they finally settled on a lot next to their children’s elementary school and close to downtown. The biggest challenge was to design a house that looked like it had always been a part of the turn of the century neighborhood that it is located in and not a new construction project.
In order to reflect the a look and feel of the neighborhood, the exterior of the house is anchored by two traditional entry features, the front porch and the port-a-cochere. The large front porch welcomes guests to the home and allows the family to sit on the porch swing and mingle with neighbors as they pass by. In Decatur, carriage houses and detached garages are a common sight. Therefore the family opted for a detached garage that is accessed via the side port-a-cochere. The red dutch door on this side entrance, welcomes family and friends directly into the mudroom. Vintage details were incorporated on the exterior of the house such as reclaimed farmhouse wood brackets and diamond pattern window mullions. The back of the house has a screened in porch, almost a necessity in the South.
On the interior, the house feels very open and modern yet it incorporates all of the traditional rooms found in older homes in the area. The gracious foyer leads to a “front parlor” that also functions as a piano room and as a private living room for their guests. There is a guest suite on the main level that would accommodate aging parents and is connected to the front parlor. The side entry leads to a mud room which opens to the kitchen and accounts for most of the family’s daily traffic through the house. The kitchen, breakfast, and family room are all combined in the back of the house and lead directly to the private expansive backyard. To complement the homeowners’ love of entertaining the kitchen incorporates an 12′ long island and custom baking center. An antique pantry cabinet was refurbished and built into the kitchen. In addition, the x-pattern found on the antique pantry cabinet was incorporated into the tops of the new cabinetry.
