Two years ago we purchased a 1900 mill house. The kitchen was pretty dysfunctional, depressing, dark and closed off from the dining room. We took down the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. Being on a very limited budget we found kitchen cabinets on Criags List ($450!) The big surprise was after taking a circular saw to the linoleum floor and tearing up the 1 inch of plywood finding wood floors! The pantry was created in the kitchen using doors from a closet in a laundry room. We built a island and topped the cabinets and island with porcelain tile. In the dining area we built a banquette. After lots of elbow grease and time we love our kitchen. And all for well under $2500.
