When we purchased our house we knew right away that the 35 year old kitchen had to go. It was poorly laid out, wasted space, had terrible lighting and had cheap cabinets that were falling apart. The stove was visible from the front door! As I had just upgraded the attic insulation (R60) I decided to drop the ceiling 4″ to accomodate the recessed lighting. The ceiling was painted black to give the illusion of infinite space. The only fixture that remained in it’s original location was the sink. Changing from a “U” shaped layout to a galley with an island between gave far more usable storage and counter space. The entrance to the attached laundry room was moved and is now accessed through a custom made Shoji screen. The laundry room houses an upright freezer which allowed us to install an all-fridge in the kitchen. The fridge is located behind a curved wall which screens it from the front entrance. The flooring is prefinished bamboo t&g plank. All the deep lower cabinets have drawers with full extension slides so everything is accessible. I had the cabinets custom made by a local shop. We wanted something efficient, modern and adventurous at the same time. We feel that the yellow walls, black ceiling and metallic-look cabinets as well as the more functional layout, have met our goals.
