After living with this 1970s kitchen for quite some time, this family decided it was time for their dream kitchen. The project was a complete remodel that started with gutting the original kitchen area. The homeowner hired us, Croley & Fowler Woodworking, to build, finish and install cherry wood cabinets, an island, wood appliance doors, wine cooler surround and dry bar cabinets. We worked closely with the homeowners on the design and details of the kitchen. To save money the homeowner chose to do some of the work himself including: the demo work, moving a couple of walls, relocating a bathroom, building a mud room and installing a new hardwood floor.
All the woodwork was hand-crafted at our Wichita, KS shop. The cabinets and wood trim were made with FAS cherry and received a toned and glazed finish. We also used cherry wood for the dovetailed drawers throughout the kitchen. All drawers have under mount soft-close slides. The columns and posts were fluted by hand using special jigs. The mouldings on the doors were designed by us and made using a custom ground shaper cutter. All the doors have soft-close hinges. The island, being a focal point, included turned and fluted corner posts, granite top with bar sink, drawers and pull outs, an ice maker and an automated Blum Servo-drive trash unit (a light touch and it opens automatically). The family has two dogs so we included a dog-food container pull out in one of the lower cabinets. There is also a spice cabinet pull out next to the range hood. The upper bar cabinet has textured glass with interior lighting.
Unique to this kitchen is the base cabinet root cellar. The kitchen sits over a large crawl space (five foot high). In one of the base cabinets we made an opening through the base and floor opening it up to the crawl space. The cabinet interior serves as the root cellar. We sealed the cabinet, put a band of weather stripping aroung the door and installed mesh screen over the hole to the crawl space. Inside the cabinet is a stainless steel wire pullout for their vegetables and other items.
