This project was on our own home and involved approximately 365 sq ft that was taken up by our formal dining room and kitchen. We started with a list of what we wanted out of our kitchen for our family of 5. Top of the list was an eat-in counter followed by an office for my wife to keep track of all our family paper work. Other considerations were lots of storage for the kitchen and a build in buffet. We decided to keep with the original footprint of the house and not expand outward. We spent about 6 months in the planning stage with various layouts. The final plan involved gutting the walls down to the studs and removing the non load bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room. We stole a foot of space out of the powder room to make the hallway wider by putting in a smaller pedestal sink. For lighting we went with all leds for the cans, under cabinet and pendants over the island for the energy usage savings that they give. We used every space we could for storage, closet space at the top of the stairs to the basement was stolen for a pantry with pull out drawers accessible from the kitchen hallway. The wall behind the refrigerator between the office and kitchen was framed with 2×6’s to give use the ability to put in a full depth fridge without it sticking out extremely far from the counter. The double windows in the dining room were turned into a 6′ sliding door and a new opening was created for an awning window over the sink. A window was also created for the new office. All the exterior walls were sprayed with closed cell foam. The cabinet boxes were built on sight with prefinished plywood and drawer boxes and doors were ordered on line and shipped. The kitchen counter and island were finished with honed granite and the buffet and phone wall were topped with black walnut glued up and finished on site.
