When my fiance and I decided to build our house, my father offered to build the kitchen for us. My future wife drew the layout on a piece of graph paper, with each square being scaled to 12 inches. We didn’t realize until the 48 sq ft piece of granite arrived that this was scaled very aggressively!
The cabinet fronts were made from cherry trees that my father milled into lumber at his home in North Carolina, with the cases made from cherry plywood. They were driven across the country to New Mexico, where the rich cherry tones add warmth to our light, high desert adobe style home.
The kitchen is designed with the entertaining cook in mind, with a cooktop centered in the massive granite island, with close seating and a built in cherry bench placing guests in the kitchen, without interfering with the cook. A pantry adjoins the kitchen for easy access to sundry items and wine.
The cook is treated to an eastward view of the mountains that light up in the evening with beautiful alpenglow.
