A request for towel storage resulted in an upgraded master bath incorporating rustic design features more suited to our lakefront home setting, décor preferences and lifestyle.
The 1983 master bath was outdated, with no towel or efficient under-sink storage. The tub/shower enclosure was cramped for even one person to use and almost butted up to the toilet. When closed, a solid pocket door made this area cave-like.
The 1983 décor, wall to wall horizontal mirror, round vanity lights, faux marble counter-top laminate, vinyl flooring, almond walls and fixtures was more suited to an old Reno motel than a beautiful, lakeside setting.
Project remodel included:
· Removal of vinyl & particle board subfloor, trim, sheetrock from walls, counter top and old sinks, toilet, fiberglass tub/shower and ceiling light/fan combination.
· Framing towel storage cabinet & shower toiletries niche
· Moving existing wiring
· Installation of plumbing rough in, insulation between studs, shower pan base, shower pan, Hardi-backer in shower (seams sealed & entire shower enclosure covered with paint on vapor barrier), 2 foot and2 inch square tiles, 7′ high, curved shower rod, dual shower fixtures, Quartzite rocks for toiletry niche and soap dish and tile grout, new ceiling light & fan, .
· Beginning with 10″ rough cut CVG old growth Western Red Cedar (400-500 years old), ripped to 4″, planed, tongue and grooved, 2 coats Danish oil (sanded in between).
· Beginning with 2 “vertical cedar slabs (waste from squaring trees to mill); ripped various widths and planed to ¾”, tongue and grooved, sanded and oiled.
· Installation of Hardi-backer over sub-floor, 17″ ceramic floor tiles (same as entry, family room, guest bath and laundry), grout and seal.
· Installation of cedar tongue and groove in towel storage cabinet and in storage niches; wall surfaces horizontal tongue and groove and vertical tongue and groove “wild grain” above and below towel storage and windows (“wild grain” to match exiting oak in under sink cabinet doors).
· Installation of granite counter tops, under mount sinks, toilet, over sink lighting, ceiling light, and mirrors.
· Design, crafting and installation of natural Madrona wood towel racks, toilet paper holder and magazine rack plus ceiling light medallions from cedar slabs and trim.
· Installation of “twig” drawer/cabinet pulls and under-sink slide out storage shelving.
· Removing section of pocket door and framing in an antique, etched glass window.
