The South Surf Road Residence is a summer home for a family of four that reside full time in Georgia, but are originally from the New York metro area and have vacationed along the New Jersey shore for several years.
Located on a flat, relatively small 60 x 108 foot oceanfront lot in Silver Beach along one of New Jersey’s barrier islands, the house is 2 ½ stories with 3500 square feet of interior heated space and approximately 300 additional square feet of exterior space distributed throughout the Screened Porch, covered balconies and the exterior portion of the third level Crow’s Nest. There is also a 20 x 30 foot deck along the east side of the house.
Drawing inspiration from the classic Shingle Style beach houses of the Northeast as well as borrowing elements from the architecture of communities such as Seaside and Rosemary Beach, Florida, the aesthetic of this house is an eclectic mix of various styles that have been reinterpreted for contemporary living.
The house also took much of its form from adhering to the strict township setbacks and building coverage requirements as well as the client’s building program. Much of the design took its cues from maximizing water views, day lighting and breezes, and solar orientation.
The exterior building materials are Western Red Cedar shingle siding and roofing, copper standing seam roofing, mahogany framing at the Screened Porch, Ipe decking, Azek trim boards and moldings.
