Our residential design/build company was hired to create a unique kitchen addition between a stately home and elegant barn-like garage. The owner is from northern Europe and wanted a European feel. She wanted expansive space and copious amounts of light, yet a sense of cozyness, so she would be comfortable when home alone or when entertaining large groups. We designed this fireplace into a nook in the kitchen addition, with a raised hearth, squat firebox proportions, and reclaimed materials. To keep the scale down part of the mass is buried in the wall, and the chimney breast tapers in the manner of a European chimney hood.

Here you can see the recess meant to receive the wood mantel shelf. The angled chimney breast is formed with concrete block and parged with mortar. The bricks are reclaimed from the original patio.

In progress. The mantel shelf was made from leftover parts of the reclaimed pine timbers we used for the structural truss roof. It was later changed to reclaimed rustic barn beams.

Facing the fireplace, the kitchen is to the right. Originally we planned for the range hood to match the fireplace, but later decided that it would be better if the hood did not compete with the fireplace.

This is the view standing at the fireplace, looking over the informal dining area toward the main house. The kitchen addition is flooded with light thanks to four large skylights and 12' wide french sliding doors facing a new patio.
