The prominent feature of this 1800 sq. ft. cottage on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada is the chimney and fireplace built with local limestone and by local talent. The chimney measures 12 ft. at the base, 5 feet at the top and 28 feet in height. The fireplace has a raised hearth, is 4′ wide by 2′-8″ high with recessed pockets on each side to accommodate a custom made bi-fold glass doors. The saddle of the chimney is composed of 4 custom made triangular and 2 standard operating skylights. The breeze from the lake and the cool of the surrounding limestone are drawn into the cottage and circulated through the open skylight creating a most comfortable interior environment without the use of AC or a fan. The only art to dress the fireplace are two simple climbers trying to reach the top.
