Set on magical wooded knoll, this original 1937 one bedroom cabin was fully updated to accommodate 21 century amenities without overpowering its original sense of character, charm and scale. The home was rich in woodcraft and details. The priority was to save as much as possible of the original clear heart redwood paneling. A key element of modern California living is the open flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The new 2 story cabin addition connects the older cabin rooms to a new Colorado stone landscape patio. The second floor outdoor covered porches and balconies are additional architectural features which retain the cabin lifestyle.
In the style of Maybeck, a ladder leads to a theater balcony overlooking the two story living room, which I converted to a modern home office. The original 2 sided brick fireplace anchors the core center of the home. By balancing many shades and textures of materials that compliment the antique redwood, I provided the eye a variety of sustainable surfaces in which to live and interact with; such as custom concrete countertops, new walnut cabinetry and oil rubbed bronze hardware and fixtures. By restoring these timeless features I was able to add a new warm and vibrant chapter to Woodmonts history.
