We liked our layout but needed a fresh start with updated hardware and storage solution with better flow and layout.
The island was an issue and workflow around the old sink was troublesome. Counter space was minimal and needed a solution.
We went with one level counter height and separated the sink from the dishwasher. We added Air Admittance Valves directly behind the dishwasher for venting and also one under the sink.Â
With the new update; lots of counter space workflow and storage with display section.

Old kitchen with a small island. The upper level of the counters cut off view and reduced working counter space.
New counter using Quartz and we went with a "thicker look" 2.5" island giving the island visual weight and distinction. Dark stained cabinets on the island creates contrast. The ceiling was dropped mirroring the island to allow focus and additional lights.
Extra display space located at the end of the island.
Glass back splash complements the contemporary look of the appliance and material. We used oil-rubbed bronzed finish pulls to contrast the cabinet colour and compliment the dark island cabinet.
Lots of counter space with only an increase of 24" footprint along the original wall. A stand-alone dishwasher is vented using an Air Admittance Valve directly behind the unit with its own water supply. Raised glass door uppers in the center creates focus and breaks up flow for interest.
