If you need to fill cracks or holes in wood that has been stained here’s a tip.
Get a light weight filler (white is preferred) and add a small amount of shoe paste that matches your stain colour. Mix a small batch adding only a small amount of paste to the filler. Try not to sand afterward but if you have to you can dampen a cloth with water to clean it up. Try this first on a scrap piece to see how it works.
Also, if you’re filling holes on painted wood that were left by your nailer you can use exterior window putty (the grey stuff for old sash windows) it’s quick to use and doesn’t need sanding, just use your thumb to apply.

Man! If this were me, I'd be chucking that piece of furniture into storage or the local dump already! It's so difficult to match stains and colours that honestly I hardly think it's the effort. In all honesty, It would really depend on the extent of damage as well. If the problem isn't too bad, I'd probably be okay to just let it be.. After all, cracks and chips lend character doesn't it? Haha!
