This couple wanted to remodel their existing 1200 sqft house into something that represented both their medieval-craftsman-with-touches-of-modern tastes – so we came up with a scheme which we called “chicken and waffles” – the clients’ term to refer to the blending of their differing tastes. We added another 1278 sqft and an incredible amount of craft/detail – from incising sculpting moments into the stucco, to medieval iron work on the front “hobbit” door to custom iron strapping on the beams and Bachelor tiles on the fireplace. The hurdle here was cost, so in the world of good-fast-cheap pick any 2, they decided to proceed slowly and deliberately as well as to do a great deal of the craftsmanship themselves.
