The site for this cottage sits on a barrier beach between the open Atlantic Ocean to the south and inland salt-water ponds to the north. The views in virtually any direction are quite spectacular. The entire house had to be elevated to 11 feet above mean high water to meet regulations and survive storms and hurricanes. The owners wanted a three-bedroom house with open kitchen/dining/living area, a flexible den/guest room, and a room to practice Tai Ji. We created a concrete hurricane resistant frame elevated on deep pilings to support a conventionally framed 3 story house above with parking, storage and outdoor shower area below. Instead of the usual framed latticework infill between the piers we initially proposed using used tightened fabric panels that are under pressure from adjustable X bracing to keep the fabric from flapping in the wind. However the owner was inspired by the many uses of bamboo during a trip to China so we adapted the panels to incorporate bamboo instead of the fabric. The frame creates a platform that provides both indoor and outdoor space with a very large overhang that hides drop down hurricane shutters that secure the house from storms when the owners are away. The first floor perimeter is glazed with Nana doors that can be opened to let the breeze flow through the house on hot sunny beach days, and the floor is continuous from inside to outside creating the illusion of one large indoor/outdoor floor surface. The second and third floors house the bedrooms, Tai Ji exercise room and a stair to an upper viewing deck.
