The clients had previously asked us to design a weaving studio for them and specifically asked that we completely ignore the look of their existing log and stone veneered home. A few years after the studio was done they then asked us to remodel the house, keeping the same footprint as much as possible, but making the existing house match the studio.
As the form of the existing house, settled into its landscape, was vastly different from the weaving studio, we achieved symbiosis by using the same materials and windows. Harmony in form was introduced through hints of the massing of the modern box like studio to the 1970’s gabled roof house.
The renovation of this existing residence was extensive and comprised of the exterior, kitchen, living spaces, bathrooms, and basement. The top priorities were lots of natural light and a focus on materials.
