Originally the house had a small galley kitchen which also served as the main pathway between areas of the house. It was dark, cramped with very little counter space. The upright freezer was in the hall. My objective was to get an open, clean, bright space with plenty of countertops and storage that allowed you to see and use all the space without ending up having a ‘dark zone’ that you only entered on annual cleaning ventures. Ah yes….also without breaking the bank.

Originally a small dark galley kitchen with little counter space. You couldn't open theoven door without standing to the side. Fridge was in the hallway.

There was a small unlit hallway - little more than a shoulder width with cupboards and a set of stairs heading to the basement (end of the wall) that were all removed

Everything was gutted to the wall boards. Nice to have shiplap over the studs.

The new kitchen with the island. Decided against upper cupboards as I am shorter and can never reach them. Everything accessible, lots of countertops space. Used local woods to create the counters except for the island.

Added a bar sink and coffee bar near the dining area where all the mugs and my teas are stashed. So handy for company. It made the chimney (which couldn't be moved) into a focal point and useful backdrop as well as breaking the line of sight from the living room.
