Portable tool storage for the small tools you always need and can’t seem to find
I have a small carpentry business on the eastside of Seattle Wa. As I get older I’m always thinking of ways to work more ergonomic. I have a small trailor and it seems there are small items I always need and am searching through my shelves and boxes trying to find. I had an idea to build a small box that could attach to my trailor door. I went down to the local arts and crafts store and purchased some blocks of foam, I built the container around the foam. I simply place all my chisels, nail sets, files, screwdrivers and any thing else that is small in the foam. I just open up my trailor door and there it all is right at my finger tips. I made the box out of some scrap 3/4 poplar ply and installed it right at chest level, no more getting on my knees and crawling through my bins. When or if the foam wears out I just pop in some new blocks of foam. As you know we get alot of rain in seattle so I made it detatchable so I can just pop out a screw and remove the tote if needed. I had to laugh at myself when I finished making this, my wife said you are not getting any younger are you? Ha Ha!. Hope this might be of some help for someone else out there. This is actually an EXCELLENT storage solution! I was a bit thrown off when you said portable storage though, for a second there I thought that you'd be able to lift out the box from its perch on the door and carry the whole tray of tools with you wherever you needed to too!
It's a good idea that I might want to implement in my garage for sure! Standing a lot of the tools upright seems to save me a lot of storage space and it seems that it could be quite helpful since there are always certain tools that you'll use more often than others.
It's quite an interesting solution to have your tools in storage standing up! Quite smart really. You can actually see what you're grabbing for instead of digging through everything!
