This was a long-awaited kitchen remodel. From the time the Minsons purchased this house before kids they identified the kitchen as the first and really only problem with this cute 50s house in a quiet old neighborood not far from the University in Eugene, Oregon. While nice, the house was very small and as their second child was on the way in 2003, we did a substantial addition for them with a new master bed/bath, kids bed, and playroom–all relying on the period style to fit seamlessly with the existing house and landscape. 10 years later the kitchen was truly unbearable, and I helped them design a kitchen of their dreams to suit thier needs and still be conscious of cost. Above all we wanted it to become a pleasant space for family to spend time together in, and to feel fitting with the rest of the house. To accomplish this we met to resolve design issues on site one at a time with local artisans and installers. We didn’t rush the design process and it paid off with a remodel that was executed primarily over the course of a couple short vacations, so that the Minsons could continuously use their kitchen during the project–which indeed informed a few decisions as well and made the finish product that much more satisfying. We added a breakfast nook and table, new wood windows, tile backsplashes, stone countertops over reconstructed cabinets, recessed dimmable LED lighting, wood flooring, plumbing fixtures and dishwasher, and many infrastructure upgrades along the way. The owners are very happy with their long-awaited kitchen as they now poudly invite guests in and choose to spend more family time there reading, cooking, talking, and eating.
