Using ahole saw to install hihats often results in sheetrock or plaster dust blowing everywhere. I recenly needed to retrofit 20 hihats into a ceiling. To minimize the mess, I cut off the bottom of a 5 galllon water bottle and drilled a few holes. The hole in teh bottom allows me to drill from below using a regular hole-saw mounted on an extension. A small side hole was drilled to attach a knob. Lastly, I drilled a hole opposite the handle to hold the hose of a small shop vacuum.
I was able to drill all the hihat holes almost without a spec of dust escaping. Drilling while the vacuum was running collected all the dust. The acrylic bottle also captures chunks of crumbling plaster that are too heavy for the vacuum.
The dust collector took about 15 minutes to build and saved me hours of prep and cleanup time.
