The existing structure and setting of the home creates the background that makes this remodel so unique. The existing home sits on a farm with horses and has an amazing 180 degree west view of the Rocky Mountains. The house was a two piece modular home and did not capture the views or relate to its surroundings. The family had already done one remodel several years back that was on the south side of the house, but this created a traffic problem as the small kitchen and mechanical room were the pathway to the other side where the bedrooms were located. The kitchen was small and not suitable for a family of five. Thus the need for a remodel!
The goal was to expand the kitchen and dining space with a large island while capturing as much of the views as possible. The kitchen is the hub for this family and they wanted space to cook, entertain, hangout, work, and relax. Plus, they needed room to move from one side of the house to the other.
Our design solution was to cut a rectangle out of the existing modular home and use the center structural wall as the support for half of the new roof. We added more space to the west pushing the kitchen out of the existing footprint which created a nice spacious travel path connecting the two sides of the house. A dining room and new entrance were created off of the kitchen connecting the entire public space without walls breaking up the rooms.
The clients wanted a modern space in both design and finishes. That was a challenge considering the existing building was a simple modular home and the previous addition had a mountain/log feeling. It didn’t feel right trying to mold something to fit the current two vernaculars. Our solution was to allow the addition/remodel to be it’s own modern piece cutting and overlapping the other two styles. We pushed it out of the exiting footprint to not only create more interior space but to emphasize the remodel on the exterior elevations.
