I have a dedicated hot water re-circulation system in our house which was installed by the previous owner (HVAC contractor). At some point I noticed that the TACO pump was not running (cartridge had burned out). I also noticed that I had not lost any performance in ‘instant’ hot water. I determined that the system was simply working on gravity feed while the warn out pump was idle, I took out the pump (spliced in a 3/4 inch copper tubing) and have not looked back.
To support this, when Henry For first produced the model T Ford there were no water pumps installed on these cars from the factory (learned this from my brother’s 1916 Model T). Cool ‘heavier” water exits the bottom of the radiator into the engine block and the cooler water pushs the hot water back to the radiator. The same thing is happening on our hot water re-circulation system, the water cools a bit as it exits the top of thewater heater and returns to the lower valve onn the water heater.
The system does have a direction flow valve. Cost to circulate water is $0.
Cost of education: I had already ordered 2 replacement cartridges for the TACO pump which are sitting on the shelf, just in case!!
