Squibnocket Compound is located on 215 acres of private, ocean-facing farmland. Within the farm itself are ancient dry set stone walls and rolling terrain with distant views to the rocky beaches and ocean along the south facing coast of the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The entire 215 acre farm is home to a total of twenty new homes spread amongst the farm walls that originally defined the various grazing fields of the farm.
High on a ridge, as one approaches the property along a cobblestone and grass lined drive, the house begins to unfold. The cobblestone path guides one through the carriage house wings portal unto the motor court, which is framed by New England field stone walls, planted gardens, and lawns thus aligning with the main body of the home and the front portico. This outdoor room creates a wonderful arrival area and creates a natural sequence to flowing through the house.
The newly constructed home was created within the strict town of Chilmark’s architectural guidelines, declaring a maximum building height of 18′. The gambrel form was chosen to allow the maximum square footage on the second floor or within the story and a half gathering spaces. Its wonderful volumes, punctuated by clear story dormers, allow light to penetrate the house from above.
All of the living spaces are designed to maximize water views and indoor outdoor living space. The double height living room serves as the focal point of the house. Dormers expressed on the exterior of the house provide the living room with clearstory light.
The ocean facing feature of the home takes advantage of the multiple indoor/outdoor living opportunities with both enclosed and open porches with fireplaces or fire pits, all framed to align with a future pool. A putting green is also located off towards the north facing the hills of Chilmark and the Blackstone Valley. The entire ensemble celebrates the up island casual lifestyle that this portion of the island is known for in a timeless classic way.
