This project was part of a whole home remodel where we started from essentially the original framing. For the purpose of this submission we’re focusing on the kitchen/dining room portion. The original space was a galley kitchen with no direct access to the dining room even though they shared a wall. You had to go through two doorways to get to the dining room no matter which side of the kitchen you exited. Our goal was combine the rooms into one, open space without reducing storage space and add additional seating options.
Removing the wall between the two rooms meant we would lose a whole row of upper cabinets. We would keep a peninsula which would allow us to maintain lower space. To alleviate this issue, we reconfigured the side hallway/mud room entrance into the kitchen. We walled in the former entrance to the kitchen so we could add additional cabinets in this space. We also added a pantry that backs up against a chimney which we also exposed the brick on two sides.

Before picture of the galley kitchen and back portion of the dining room. The former side entrance to the kitchen can be seen in the back left of the bottom pic. The wall between the kitchen/dining room is on the right in the kitchen pic.
After picture showing the additional cabinets that were added to make up for the upper cabinets that were removed.
LED can lights were also added in the ceiling to ensure adequate lighting in the space.
View across peninsula into dining room. Shows the original corner built in that was saved during the renovation. The fridge surround was custom built so a normal size refrigerator could be used and not a more expensive, built-in or counter depth model. The cabinet was built to match the 25" cabinet peninsula counter needs plus a 15" overhang for the seating area.
The cooktop is a 36" Whirlpool model as well as a Sharp microwave drawer.
View from across the dining room area. Shows the added pantry on the right hand side as well as the second custom built surround for a 166 bottle wine refrigerator.
Side view showing the reconfigured side entrance and exposed brick chimney. Also partially shows the waterfall counter on the end of the peninsula. The KitchenAid double 30" convection oven is in the background.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.
