This kitchen was part of a whole house remodel. The old galley kitchen was small and poorly laid out. The main entrance to the home was in the kitchen and there was no clear view to the water. The new floor plan included a nine square foot addition, which was enough to fill in an awkward jog at the front of the house. This addition allowed us to create a new entrance separate from the kitchen. We added a window on the East kitchen wall for the owners to catch a view of the water beyond. We also reconfigured the galley into a U-shape with a peninsula and half wall facing the dining room. The kitchen now has a connection to the rest of the house and the outdoors. We utilized poorly used space under the stairs to create an armoire-like built-in, with deep drawers below for storage and a shallow cabinet above with glass doors for display. We left the ceiling joists exposed to keep the beach house feel. A special feature in the kitchen is a sliding barn door that hides a shallow recessed wine rack between two studs. The barn door is actually an old closet door from the original house; it has all of the previous owners (and their guests) heights with dates labeled on it.
